Housing needs when national crises can access to new portal

Singaporeans who are in a position in which they require accommodation for an emergency may use an online platform to connect with people who are willing to lend their homes.

In a joint announcement on March 8, the Ministry of National Development and Mogul.sg declared that the initiative will only be in place in times of crisis.

The new website allows people who require homes to browse listings of residential properties as well as the terms which homeowners set, such as the duration of stay, the suitability for families or pets and more.

The statement also noted that this could be beneficial during national emergencies when there is a need for housing temporarily. For instance during the Covid-19 pandemic, certain Singaporeans graciously offered to host Malaysians who were homeless during the closure of the border.

Mogul.sg is working on this emergency portal and is integrating it into their current platform.

In a deal that is signed by MND and the firm, the latter will take on all the expenses associated with the portal. The firm will also be required to ensure that users of the portal are secured and vetted as required by law.

The partnership between the both the private and public sectors was described as the first of its kind in Singapore.
